Fall and winter are my favorite times of year. Maybe it is the cooler weather, picturesque colors of the turning leaves, crops being harvested or the quiet and peacefulness of a thick blanket of snow. Yes, I am different than most because most people have a strong dislike for the shorter days, wet weather and cold. I guess it all depends on your viewpoint and perspective.
Speaking of viewpoint and perspective, those are issues my family and I have been considering lately. With the children back in school and involvement with sports, dance, church, showing cattle and all the other activities our family—and I am sure your family—are pulled between, stepping back and gaining perspective on our lives and our goals/purpose is required.
It’s easy for life to take over and lose perspective on the big picture. With the everyday grind of putting in a crop, cutting hay, calving cows, breeding cows, fixing fence, marketing, talking with customers and much more, there is hardly time to sleep. However, taking an honest assessment, or an audit if you will, of your life and your breeding program is a requirement from time to time.
I encourage you to take some time this fall and assess your breeding program, your role in the breed and the industry. Establish perspective for where you currently are, where you want to go and what action steps are necessary to get there. It might be that you are over extended in some areas and not investing enough in others. You might be like me and need to cut out some activities that are not crucial and focus more on those that are—the basics, if you will. Or maybe you are right on track where you need to be.
Matthew 14:23 says Jesus had just fed 5,000 men, as well as their families and then, “After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.â€
This is just one example from scripture where Jesus—after doing a lot for others—takes time to step back from his work and gain perspective, worship and focus. Following his example, I am confident it would be beneficial for us as well. After solidifying your focus, your program is sure to achieve greater results, and your impact on the breed, your customers and the beef industry are sure to be more fruitful.
