Election Process Continues

The Nominating Committee has selected Chad Settje, Creston, Nebraska, (second term); and John Tobe, Lancaster, Kentucky, (second term); Jim Bob Hendrickson, Adair, Oklahoma; Dexter Edwards, Beulaville, North Carolina; and Austin Hager, Karlsruhe, North Dakota, as candidates for the NALF Board of Directors. Bret Begert, Allison, Texas, and Warren Symens, Amherst, South Dakota, have been appointed by NALF President Bob Mitchell and the Board of Directors to fill the positions of Harris Mosher, Telford, Pennsylvania, and Tom Field, Centennial, Colorado. All candidates (nominated or member-at-large) will have their biographies published in the December issue of Limousin World and will be placed on the official ballot.

Those unable to attend the annual meeting in Denver may submit a written request for absentee ballots to the NALF office before December 1. The office will not accept requests after that date. Once members complete and sign their absentee ballots, they should return them to NALF’s official accountant prior to December 31.

Change Made to NALF’s Genetic Defect Policy

In an effort to assist membership in the handling of defect carriers, the NALF Board decided September 27 to amend its defect policy to
the following:

“Bulls must be tested free in order to be eligible for registration; females will be registered regardless of test outcome and carriers will be denoted on their registration papers and on the NALF website. Carrier females born after 1/1/12 will not be eligible to record embryo transplant progeny.”

The Board will set a sunset date on these carrier animals at the January board meeting held in Denver during the National Western Stock Show.

Strong EPDs Rely on Breeders’ Submissions

The deadline to submit data for the next international Limousin genetic evaluation is November 15.

That deadline is especially important for producers of Lim-Flex® progeny from Angus or Red Angus parents that are not in the NALF herdbook. Without the data, their expected progeny differences (EPDs) will not be available for winter show programs or spring marketing materials.

Birth, weaning and yearling performance data are necessary for reliable EPDs, and breeders’ data are the raw material from which NALF computes genetic predictions. The breed’s competitive advantages and genetic improvement depend on breeders’ data collection and submission.

One key to determining an animal’s genetic merit is to mitigate environmental effects on performance. A contemporary group does that because it includes cattle of the same sex, within a similar percentage-Limousin group, that were born within a 90-day period, that have been managed alike, and weighed on the same date (excluding birth weight). More information is available regarding this topic on the “Genetic Evaluation” section of the NALF website.

Nominations Sought for Commercial Program Awards

Each year NALF honors a Commercial Producer of the Year, Commercial Marketing Booster of the Year and Limousin Promoter of the Year during the National Western Stock Show. Download a nomination form for each of those awards from the “Programs” section of the NALF website, or request copies from the NALF office. This year’s nominations are due in the NALF office on November 30.

NALF Reinstates Focus Dam Program

The NALF Board has reinstated a revised Focus Dam program that recognizes dams and sires with outstanding productivity, fertility and longevity. The program requirements require that a cow produce three consecutive calves with a weaning weight ratio of 105 or greater while maintaining a set calving interval and having her first calf before 792 days of age. Dams with eight or more qualifying offspring will be named Elite Focus Dams. Sires will qualify as Focus Sires if three or more daughters qualify as Focus Dams.

Preliminary MOE Point Standings Available

Medal of Excellence (MOE) point standings are available on the NALF website. The standings are not reflective of data submission. To remain eligible for the MOE year-end recognitions, exhibitors must submit their animals’ required performance data by November 30. Birth, weaning and yearling weights are required for all animals and a bull’s scrotal measurement must be submitted at one year of age. If an animal is over 400 days of age, a breeding soundness exam and semen test must also be reported. Females that will be 600 days of age by 12/31/12 must report a pregnancy test. Direct all MOE questions to Bobbi Hartwig in the NALF office.

Help Your Customers Help Themselves

Help your bull customers market their feeder calves through the Limousin Sale Barn. Go to the NALF home page, click the ‘Sale Barn’ tab and follow the directions to list calves for sale. Whether consigning to an auction or selling by private treaty, the online classifieds are a free, easy way to help ensure every bidder possible (including Strauss Brands and Laura’s Lean Beef) competes for your calves and your customers’ calves.

NALF also is promoting a number of special Limousin-influenced feeder-calf sales around the country. Find the list via the “News” section of the website.
