As I write this column, we are in the dead heat of summer which means most field days and all regional shows are in the books. As it seems every year, no sooner are we through with those fantastic events, than we find ourselves hustling around preparing for the summer’s premier event, The National Junior Limousin Show & Congress and All-American Limousin Futurity.
As I think of all the hard work, time, money and miles so many of our Limousin breeders put into making these summer’s events truly memorable, it reminds me of the quote, “Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit.â€
We all know there are successes and failures when exhibiting cattle. There is little question everyone wants to win, but thinking of it from a larger perspective, the value in these events in my opinion is in the process or “action†of getting to that point of competition and bringing people together from across the country. Despite the individual wins or losses, when people come together with a common goal relative to the Limousin business the true winner is always the breed.
To me it was encouraging and reassuring to see the increased activity, larger numbers and new faces at the field days and regionals across the country. That said, I’d like to challenge every breeder, regardless of whether or not you show, to take that same fierce dedication and competitive nature and turn it toward breed improvement.
With the fall sale season creeping closer, I encourage you to take full advantage of the summer platforms; shows, trade-shows, seminars, state fairs, etc., to promote your cattle in whichever fashion suits your program.
I look forward to visiting with you at the upcoming state fairs and throughout the fall sale run as we champion for the breed. If we can ever assist you with anything Limousin related, our phone lines are always open and we are willing to lend a helping hand.
