Board Meeting This Month
The North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) Board of Directors will gather for its spring meeting April 3-4 in Denver, Colorado. Contact any board member or Carol Johnson in the NALF office to suggest agenda items.
Texas to Host BIF Convention
The Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) annual meeting is North America’s leading forum for discussing genetic evaluation and improvement, and NALF encourages its members to attend. This year’s event will be in Houston, Texas, April 18-21.
Visit www.beefimprovement.org/convention.html for information about registration and the program.
Request MOE Status, Nominate Judges
State and regional Limousin associations can petition NALF for permission to host a Medal of Excellence (MOE) show. Petition forms, rules and judges lists are available under the ‘Programs’ tab on the website. If there is a local or state show you would like counted for MOE points, submit the petition form by June 5.
Active annual and lifetime members can submit nominations for the approved-judges list until June 30. Mail, fax or e-mail them to the activities director in the NALF office. Provide your member number or herd prefix and the nominee’s address and phone number.

“Win The Jackpot” NJLS&C will be hosted by the Iowa Limousin Association. Find the 2012 NJLS&C schedule in the “Juniors” section of the NALF website. North American Limousin Junior Association (NALJA) members should soon receive the summer edition of NALJA News, containing more show information and entry forms.
May 15 is a Big Day for NALJA Members
All NALJA members 17 years or older may apply for the junior board of directors if they will not turn 23 during the two-year term.
Active members entering their freshman or sophomore years at four-year academic institutions and majoring in animal science or closely related fields may apply for the prestigious $500 Leonard and Vi Wulf Scholarship.
Hands-on experience with Limousin cattle, proven excellence and leadership, and effective goal setting could earn $750 Awards of Excellence for up to three NALJA members. Applicants must have been 19 to 21 years old January 1, 2012, and be in good standing with NALJA. They also must be active in some segment of the beef industry or enrolled in an agriculture major in college. Previous recipients may not reapply.
The “Juniors” section of the NALF website offers all three applications and more information about each one, or contact the activities director in the NALF office. They are due May 15.
NJLS&C: Important Hotel Information
The following is important information regarding hotel reservations for the 2012 National Jr. Limousin Show in Des Moines, Iowa, July 7-13.
The Sheraton Hotel in West Des Moines, the host hotel for the Jr. National Show, has a very limited number of rooms left. The Chase Suite Hotel (515/223-7700) and the Wildwood Lodge (515/222-9876) have been chosen for the overflow hotels. Please be advised that rooms are very limited at these hotels also. Rates for the Chase Suite Hotel are $69 per night for one queen bed and one sofa sleeper or $79 per night for two queen beds and one sofa sleeper. Both room types are suites and include a kitchenette. Rates for the Wildwood Lodge are $79 per night for either one queen or two queens.
Both hotels are located across the street from the Sheraton. Discounted rates for the Sheraton, Chase Suites, and Wildwood Lodge are only good through June 6, 2012. Please make your reservations NOW! If you are unable to make a reservation at the Sheraton at this time, please check back with them periodically to see if rooms have become available due to cancellations. The phone number for the Sheraton West Des Moines is 515/223-1800.
ET Calves’ Parents Must Have DNA on File
Breeders must parent-verify artificial-insemination (AI) sires and sire-verify donor dams via DNA before embryo-transfer (ET) calves can be registered. Before collecting and mailing samples from ET calves to Scidera Inc. (formerly (MMI Genomics), contact the NALF office to check whether the sires and dams have the proper tests and to obtain the necessary DNA case numbers, which also are available through the NALF website’s EPD and pedigree lookup.
Affiliate Organizations Should Submit Updates
State and regional association leaders need to notify NALF after their elections. Those updates are the basis for the website’s state contacts, and they ensure all information—including that regarding cooperative marketing, junior activities and news releases—gets to the correct people. If you do not have one, request an update form from the NALF office.
Bottom Line Newsletter is a Benefit of Transfers
Among the many reasons to transfer ownership of the bulls you sell is the Bottom Line newsletter, which goes to all commercial producers who have had bulls transferred to them in the last three years. Besides each issue’s current information about the Limousin breed and its role in the beef industry, the mailing panel credits you—the seller—for activating the “subscription.”
When transferring animals, be sure to include buyers’ full names and addresses. Complete information guarantees they receive the Bottom Line and ensures NALF can process the transfers correctly.
As requested by the membership, NALF offers a paperless option in regard to the printed registration certificate and performance record.
Information provided on printed papers is available on the website and/or your own member sites with “live” updates 24/7.
Manage all your NALF data online and save paper, postage, and become a little greener in the process.
You will receive certificates and performance records on animals you have purchased.
Invoices will continue to be mailed.
Make your online data entry even more efficient by signing up for automatic credit card billing using your Visa or MasterCard.
Contact Mary in the NALF office for details at 303/220-1693.
Submit Registrations, Recordings Online or on Paper
Complete, accurate data collection and reporting are fundamental to keeping your production information and the entire Limousin herdbook as informative as possible. And it is best to start with a current herd inventory.
Online recording and LIMS are available through the secured, members-only portion of the website. Record cattle; update your herd inventory; and submit performance data with NALF’s Web-based tools.
If you prefer to put pencil to paper, request your free, preprinted herd inventory, which list all active cows in your inventory.
Either way, for your data to be included in the next International Limousin Genetic Evaluation, you must submit it in time to be processed and error-checked by June 15.
